Portable Buildings Built After Schools Were Destroyed by Explosion

West Middle School

Recently, an explosion at a fertilizer plant killed and injured many people in West, Texas. The explosion reached the nearby middle school and high school. The middle school was reduced to rubble and the high school was deemed useless due to the damage it sustained. To try and get things back to normalcy, donations were being taken and portable buildings were built as classrooms for the children.

“As citizens of West we are all in this together. Long term Recovery will take several months to years. We are working non-stop to expedite processes and procedures for the health and safety of all our citizens.” – Mayor of West Tommy Muska

The nearby town of Kyle is lending a hand in getting the people of West back to normalcy. Over the weekend, Kyle residents showed up at city hall with loads of donations. Then Kyle Council Member  Kyle DonationsSamantha Bellows-LeMense braved the traffic to West to deliver the supplies. They brought toiletries, trash bags, school supplies, blankets, non-perishable foods, Gatorade, and bottled water.

After the explosion, West was left with only one school campus, West Elementary School. In a race to get school back in session by Monday, the town was on a mission to collect school supplies for the students. The school would now also be serving fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. To help alleviate the crowding with all the new students, volunteers erected portable buildings that would act as extra classrooms.

When LeMense arrived at the school she walked the hallways giving out notebooks, pens, pencils, staplers, tape, folders, backpacks, and other much needed school supplies. After hearing that the school would be short on water, LeMense returned with a carload of bottled water.

Tarps for Kids Program Helping Local Schools

Finger Painting

A tarp distributor out of Palmdale, California found a way to put its overstocked items to good use. Many companies are not sure what to do with their overstocked products, but this company is using theirs for a program called Tarps for Kids.

The California-based company, Tarps Plus, has created the Tarps for Kids program by donating their overstocked supply of untreated white canvas tarps, as well some portable building tarps to local schools. The company collaborates with the local schools to set up an event where Tarps Plus shows up with the tarps and painting Portable Garagesupplies and the kids paint them with their teachers.

The Tarps Plus truck will arrive at a school and lay out a 30 x 30 foot white campus tarp. Then a 10 x 10’ white pop-up tent is set up on top of it. The Tarps Plus employees then lay out all of the painting supplies for the kids so they can create their masterpieces! The children dip their hands in the paint and imprint their hands onto the tent along with their teachers, symbolizing the unity of the school. The tarp on the ground is for the children to free paint anything they can imagine.

Tarps Plus CEO said this about the creation of the program;

“We were trying to think of a unique way to use our overstocked tarps and tents. What better way than donating them to schools and getting the children involved with painting them?”

After it is all said and done, the schools use the tarps and tents for fundraisers,
assemblies, and various outdoor functions. Tarps Plus hopes to do the program all throughout California, but for now they are starting with the Southern half. If your school is in the Southern California area and wants to participate in the Tarps for Kids program, you can contact the company at 1-800-838-3057.

Using a Two-Car Portable Garage

They seem common enough – a two car garage attached to a home. Not all homes are equipped with such a brick-and-mortar structure, however, and often a portable garage is used in place. If you’re not sure how such a portable building works, watch the video, courtesy of Portable Garage Depot, below:

As you can see from the video, the structure used is an independent two-car, enclosed portable garage. Polyethylene walls are added to all sides of the galvanized steel frame structure and, once both cars are parked inside, a rollup door can go down for full coverage. As many families own two cars but might not own a brick-and-mortar garage, adding a portable garage to your property will give your vehicles the protection they need from the elements.

Nevertheless, different towns and cities have rules or ordinances regarding these structures, as we’ve seen several times. One common law is the amount of space a portable shelter can take up and how many a property can have. If you plan to add a shed to your property in addition to a portable garage, take note of such laws, as you may be limited to only one.

In the case you find that your property can only have one portable structure, consider one of these two-car portable garages to add as not only shelter for your vehicles but also for storage space. If you own one vehicle, a larger structure, such as the one in the video, can not only store your car but any other items you need, be it tools, a lawnmower, bicycle, or boat. The enclosed canopy gives the shelter all-around protection from rain, UV rays, mold, and dry rot, no matter what items are kept inside.

Rounded Roof Portable Garages

Portable garages come in several shapes, some of which may accommodate your needs better than others. One common type of portable storage building is a rounded roof shelter, which has a tall, curved frame and is usually used for longer vehicles like RVs. Smaller versions are available but, generally, portable garages with rounded roofs are used for longer vehicles. The frame for this shelter, which can be seen in the Shelters of America YouTube video below, is essentially composed of curved pieces of galvanized steel – all of the same size – connected together by straight pieces of steel.

Rounded roof portable garages have the same composition as other types of portable shelters, with a galvanized steel frame and a polyethylene canopy. Rounded roof portable buildings are better suited to certain climates, however. In general, a portable garage frame and canopy should withstand faster winds and large amounts of snow or rain, but rounded roof portable garages are better suited for people needing storage in areas experiencing large rain and snow falls. The rounded design allows snow or rain to simply roll off the roof and not accumulate on top.

In terms of assembly, as you can see by the video above, the polyethylene canopy stretches from one side to the other, once the frame as been assembled. As a shelter, this fully-enclosed design, as soon as you add back and front polyethylene zipper doors, is ideal for protecting vehicles or other investments that will be in storage for several months. This includes RVs, boats, motorcycles, and farm equipment. For all-around coverage, the polyethylene canopy keeps out UV rays and is waterproof and, being somewhat breathable, allows air to circulate and prevent mildew and dry rot from forming on the vehicle.
