If you have read this blog before, you are fully aware of the types of portable buildings available for numerous uses. From using a carport to harbor an old clunker you just can’t throw out to setting up a canopy for an awesome party, portable structures are an absolutely essential product for many people. There is another use for portable buildings that isn’t as discussed as the others, but may be more important, at least from a sociological standpoint: emergency shelters. These shelters are used in case of natural disasters and are also used more commonly for homeless citizens in some bigger cities. However, one county is now looking at the shelter areas under a microscope.

Rocklin and Roseville Today reports that Placer County in California is currently changing regulations that clarify where emergency shelters are allowed to be placed:

“Under the new rules, host churches will not be subject to discretionary land-use review by the county. With the Zoning Ordinance changes, church-based emergency shelters that provide humanitarian assistance are now a permitted accessory use not subject to discretionary review when operated on the church sites.

The new rules implement provisions of a new state law that require a local government to identify at least one land-use zone where emergency shelters are permitted uses and thus are not required to obtain conditional use permits or other discretionary permits.”

Thankfully, these regulations may make it a bit easier for organizations to place homeless persons in emergency shelter situations. By reducing the number of permits needed, emergency shelters have a place in Placer County, where many nonprofits have temporary housing:

“Several nonprofit groups provide transitional housing where individuals and families can stay for up to two years while receiving support services. Placer County’s Adult System of Care provides various types of supportive housing where residents are eligible to receive onsite and offsite support services. No limit is placed on how long a resident can stay in supportive housing.”

Wedding tents are often oversized party tents, and here are some options for using them for a reception outdoors.

One fixture of many outdoor weddings is party tents. These structures, usually called wedding tents, are made of the same powder-coated steel and polyester canopy combination associated with temporary structures but, instead, these structures can be significantly larger. While a wedding tent essentially refers to any such tent used at an outdoor wedding, these tents can be put up and taken down easily and, to create a network of shelters, they can be attached to each other, as well. If you’re planning a wedding or a similar outdoor event, here is a video done in Auto CAD that shows how wedding tents of varying sizes can be used for a large reception:

The voice over in the video indicates that several tents of varying sizes are connected together. On the larger size, two wedding tents are provided for a dining area for 500 guests, with 250 people sheltered by one tent. Dining at the reception is important and connected to these tents are three narrow structures referred to as “buffet tents” that shelter a table of food each. Additionally, the bride and groom need shelter and a tent is also provided for them.

What about getting around the area? As outdoor weddings are popular in warmer months, with even spring, summer, and beach weddings as popular themes, the guests may need some shade. In this case, smaller tents, such as those seen on Portable Garage Depot can be connected together to form walkways around the area. These tents, when attached to each other, provide shelter for the walkway which, as described, is made from black Astroturf. If you want to know how a large wedding tent is set up, here is a similar video:

Party tents are sold by many portable shelter dealers, and here is what you can do with one.

Party tents are often treated as secondary products at many portable shelter dealers, but many use such outdoor shelters. Party tents are essentially powder-coated steel structures with a polyester canopy that has been treated to be UV resistant and waterproof. Many of the designs for these shelters are in one-piece and collapsible, while others, particularly for larger or longer shelters, have individual parts. For at home use, this type of structure goes by such names as pop-up canopy or easy-up canopy and, for larger events like weddings, the structure is often called a wedding tent. But regardless of the size of use, the structure is always made out of the same materials.

The main use for a party tent is to provide some form of temporary shelter outdoors. For families, this often means an outdoor tent or shelter for backyard parties. The shelter can be set up and taken apart quickly, so a party tent can be brought to other occasions, such as another party or for a day at the beach. Anchors attached to the bottom of such a structure can keep it in the ground during any outdoor event. Additionally, multiple tents can be attached to each other to form a larger structure, which is helpful with a large group of people or if you want to connect a seating area with a table displaying food.

These structures have more possibilities than personal use only, however. Aside from large wedding tents, these structures are often used for trade shows and flea markets – any location in which goods are sold. Whether the event is held on concrete or dirt, one of these structures can be set up to provide shade or shelter from rain. As one can be set up quickly, it can be stored by your table and erected when rain or too much sun threatens the event.
